Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to help support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first acting position that was permanent. Her studies in drama led her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
